Yim Yames: Tribute to George Harrison

From the ATO Records Newsletter:

"The creative moniker of Jim James from My Morning Jacket has prepared a beautiful, stunning tribute to George Harrison. Recorded in 2001 just a few days after the death of Harrison, this EP contains six covers of Harrison songs. The album is entitled Tribute To, and is Yim Yames’ tribute to the man he never met. The album features four songs from Harrison’s album All Things Must Pass, as well as two Beatles songs written by him. The record is set to release on July 7th."

More information and the first single is available HERE on the Yim Yames website.

WILLIAM KUNSTLER: DISTRUBING THE UNIVERSE
The late civil rights attorney William Kunstler was one of the most famous and controversial lawyers of the 20th century. He represented civil rights and anti-war activists, as well as accused terrorists and murders. In the 1960s and 70s, Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., and represented activists protesting the Vietnam war. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or Native Americans stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer. To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most unpopular members of society: people accused of rape, terrorism, organized crime and cop killing.

At The Drive-In to Reunite?

At The Drive-In was a band I really got into while I was in college in the late 90s. They've since disbanded into two bands for the most part, The Mars Volta and Sparta. Rumors are swirling that they're in talks to reunite, more info on this news from NME.Com. This would be SWEET. If you've never heard them before, check out this track, "One Armed Scissor".

SOTD: "The Breeze" - Dr. Dog

The Hood Internet

I recently started a new job and last week I was sitting in my training class when I started talking music with a coworker of mine named Erica. Turns out she knew a LOT about music and we bounced different bands and shows off one another, realizing quickly that we shared the same taste and had been at some of the same shows.

She told me about this group called "The Hood Internet" that mashed up a lot of rap/hip hop with mostly Indie bands. I thought the concept sounded real cool (and a bit different than someone like Girl Talk) so I checked them out this weekend. Let me tell you, I was like a kid in a candy store. Some of these mash ups are amazing and there's a ton to go through. So many cool ideas and mixes of groups, I absolutely LOVE this site.

I had actually heard the "I'm A Flirt" Mashup over a year ago when my buddy JayT found it online (LOVE IT) and sent it to me at our old job, I just never realized there was a whole vault of tracks out there that these guys had done.

You can check out their homepage HERE and the full playlist is HERE.

Here's my top 5 tracks (this could change tomorrow):

1. #25 Save Me Concubine (Ghostface Killah vs Beirut)
2. #225 I'm A Flirt (Shoreline) (R Kelly vs Broken Social Scene)
3. #40 Lump Sum Of Paris (Bon Iver vs Friendly Fires vs Aeroplane)
4. #110 Can You Hear My Kids Now (Lil Kim vs MGMT)
5. #132 Don't Stop The Fancy Footwork (Rihanna vs Chromeo)
Honorable Mention: #17 Good Ol' Fashion Rump Shaker (Beastie Boys vs Matt & Kim)

I'd love to hear your favorites so feel free to leave them in the comments section below!

SOTD: "Black Heart, Blue Eyes" - Tigers That Talked

I was actually sent this clip by somebody overseas a few weeks ago, today's a good day to get it up on site. Real good song.

30 in 60 Mix: Reader Submissions

A little over a month ago I posted a mix that I had made called 30 in 60. The premise was to create a mix that was 30 songs in 60 minutes (I thought about calling it "the mix for people with short attention spans"). If you missed it the first time around, you can check it out HERE.

People seemed to really like the concept, I probably got more emails & feedback about this post than anything I've put up on the site. I remember when I started this blog last October that I said to myself, "if one person can take something from it every day, then it's totally worth it for me". It meant a lot to me that so many people thought the idea was cool and went off on their own to see what they could put together.

Lucky for me, some readers actually took on the challenge and sent me their own "30 in 60s" that I wanted to share with you. Thanks to Salome (Birmingham, AL), Bethany (Houston, TX) and Casey (New York, NY) for taking the time to put these together and sending them in. I think you'll find that they made some really cool and unique choices across a lot of genres of music. If anyone else feels like putting something together and sending it my way, I'll be happy to post it in the future. Away we go.....
